Late June: Pennsylvania Statewide and Delaware Watershed Actions
An action a day keeps the drillers away:
1. URGENT: ASAP — LATE JUNE 2010 ALERT: PROTECT PENNSYLVANIA
*****Call your PA state senator to ask her/him to co-sponsor Senator Ferlo’s one-year moratorium on all new gas drilling permits in Pennsylvania AND
*****Call your state representative to ask her/him to co-sponsor Phyllis Mundy’s one-year moratorium on all new gas drilling permits in Pennsylvania.
These are the ONLY two bills that would hit the pause button on NEW gas drilling statewide, giving time for health and safety emergency planning – an absolute minimum requirement which has not been met.
BOTH THESE BILLS are fully compatible with all the other positive bills, including the Land and Water Protection Act (2213), the Forest leasing moratorium (2235), the severance tax on existing drilling (2443), and Green Buildings (HB 444 / S 732).
OPPOSE FORCED POOLING, a new law the industry is fighting hard for. It would force Pennsylvania landowners to allow drilling under their property. Forced pooling would steal mineral rights from anyone who says “no” to drilling. It would accelerate the pace of drilling, ensure even more pollution and force environmentally conscious people, including organic farmers, to give in and risk water, air, and soil contamination under and around their own land, surface water, and groundwater.
2. PROTECT OUR DELAWARE RIVER WATERSHED: BY JULY 14 2010:
A. Act up! Write to insist on downriver hearings, oppose the Stone Energy water withdrawal, and ban fracking in our watershed: http://citizenspeak.org/node/2053
B. Basin-wide: Call the Delaware River Basin Commission: 609-883-9500 x260
Oppose exploratory shale gas drilling and water withdrawal permits for fracking. Ask that downriver voices be taken into account. And remind them of Philadelphia’s City Council resolution requiring an Environmental Impact Statement: no study, no drill!
C. Demonstrate, and testify, at the DRBC Hearing July 14, 2010, 1 pm:
25 State Police Drive, West Trenton, NJ 08628 info: www.delawareriverkeeper.org
D. Write Philadelphia City Council. Thank them for their work and send letters from: http://citizenspeak.org/node/1959
