Marcellus Drilling News, an online pro-drilling organization, has published a document recording all of the applied for or issued permits in the Marcellus Shale Formation from all of January and part of February 2011.

The report, even though it comes from a source that is very positive about drilling, shows very interesting information about potential well sites.  Permits are needed to do any drilling.  Actual land leases can come later.  Permits therefor can signal a company’s serious intent to drill and frack.

Broken down by County, the report details specific gas and oil companies as well as the drillers and how many permits each has applied for early this year.  The numbers show how many companies are investing, where they’re making plans, and also that the number of new wells could be staggering.
