Pennsylvania DEP Halts Work @ Gas Well Pre-Construction Site Over Violations Impacting Public Water Supply
Chesapeake Energy received notice last week from the PA DEP to halt work on an unconventional natural gas drilling pad in Potter County due to erosion caused by the work there threatening drinking water supplies of thousands of residents. The company failed to implement the required erosion and sediment controls prior to drilling.
“The Department of Environmental Protection said Wednesday that it issued the order against Chesapeake Energy on Tuesday after it did not respond to notice of violations of the Clean Streams Law and Oil and Gas Act.”
“It says a significant amount of sediment and silt was discharged into a stream that feeds a water source for Galeton Borough, forcing the water authority to switch to another source.”
