In Albany, the People Gather

August 27, 2012

“Unbelievable crowd”

Bill McKibben’s tweet says “Unbelievable crowd at Albany anti-fracking rally, just huge” — an exuberant message from a phenomenally serious guy. Crowd estimates have ranged upwards from 2000, well past double the organizers’ hope for 1000 participants. A dense crowd here is taking the Pledge of Resistance to fracking, at one of the large rally’s high moments, led by scientist and author Sandra Steingraber and United for Action organizer David Braun.

Another serious guy, Pennsylvania farmer Stephen Cleghorn, PhD, sent this photo of the crowd gathering early in the rally, with one sign among many proclaiming, “We will not be your guinea pigs”:

Thank you, Iris for being there and reporting on this so quickly! I was thinking about this event all day even though I wasn’t there.

My friend and I made it up to Albany from Philly and were moved to tears by the passionate testimonials and dedication of the participants. We saw old friends and made new ones…people of all ages and backgrounds, brought together by the threat to one of our most fundamental needs. It is often daunting to think that we can hold back the short sighted economic interests of these predator corporations who wish to privatize profits and socialize the environmental and economic costs of pollution and environmental damage to our waterways. But being around this crowd stirred up our hope, optimism and resolve to resist. September 20th in Philly!!! Food Not Frack will have lunch ready! Come for the food, stay to fight fracking!
